Drawing Lessons

Poem by Rachel Hadas

From mullein, goldenrod, Queen Anne’s Lace, milkweed,
coltsfoot, burdock, vetch, fern, bladderwort,
to the dead hornet on the window sill
enmeshed in webby tendrils
which can’t be seen without a magnifying glass:
where exactly does the line whose flourish
loops extravagantly off the page
stray from the straining eye, the cramping fingers
holding the pen, just where exactly does it
sneak across the border of the seen?
