Madison's Susan Powell Fine Arts gallery is presenting David Dunlop’s new solo show, “Natural Rhythms.”
From the gallery website:
DAVID DUNLOP is a modern-day old master whose luminous landscapes draw from both Renaissance techniques and contemporary science. He is an Artist, Teacher, Lecturer and Emmy Award Winning television host and writer of the PBS Series entitled, “Landscapes through Time with David Dunlop.” David’s reputation as a painter who combines artistic skill, knowledge and enthusiasm, prompted the Metropolitan Museum of Art to invite him to lecture on 4000 years of landscape painting. His paintings have been shown internationally and are held in the collections of major corporations.
David’s work has been reviewed extensively; he has been featured in The New York Times, and galleries and institutions have granted Dunlop solo shows since 1981.
When asked what is essential to this new series of paintings, the artist says; “I reply with four qualities, Motion, Space, Color and Light. Whether within a speeding cityscape or a mediation on a shoreline, my aim is to convey a sensation of vibrating luminous energy. That energy, that feeling of stirring movement may be subtle or dramatic. Similarly, conveying a feeling for space can vary between depicting an enclosed intimate scene or an enormous expanse of landscape. But always these new works allude to infinity. There is always a place for the mind’s eye to wander into deep and unseen places.”
His contemporary works bridge representational and abstract styles; based on nature and New York city scenes, painted in his distinctive technique of oil on aluminum and copper, they appeal and are sought after by collectors of both traditional and contemporary art.
